UP!–My First Book of 2017

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned here that I don’t really place much significance on the shifting from one year to the next other than prepping a new datebook and having to remember to change the number when filling out documents like bank checks. Now, if you’ve followed this blog for a while, you are well aware of what an organizational nerd I can be, so you can imagine what I do to a datebook with all the color-coding and reminders and such. It’s a project, for sure, so it’s not like it’s something I actually look forward to, but over the past few years the ONE thing I do look forward to as a new year begins is the annual meme that Sheila at Book Journey hosts: “First Book of the Year.” Continue reading

UP!–My First Book of 2016

First Book of 2016

Well, it’s that time of year again, and I’m very happy to say that Sheila at Book Journey is hosting one of the few memes I participate in: “First Book of the Year.”

I participated pre-blog launch in 2014, then again in 2015 and hope to participate every year. It’s fun to do and helps me decide which book to read next, which is always torturous for me ’cause my TBR is so long! If you have the same problem, you may want to try it 😎 Continue reading

This being my 4th time reading this series, who would’ve thought I’d read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows with pronounced hunger? I knew I’d enjoy it and read ahead of my reading schedule to be done before Sheila’s ReRead-along time frame (now complete), but I finished much more quickly. Even knowing how things turned out, I still found it to be a page turner! What cracked me up is that I still had that “I don’t want the ride to end!” feeling lol To me, this says a LOT about the talent and genius of J. K. Rowling and her gift to us in this way 🙂 Continue reading

UP!–The Half-Blood Prince: A ROYAL READ

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was the book in this series I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on. In fact, though I’ve never been able to say I had a favorite of the 7 books because I love them ALL, this is the one that seems to come to mind first. Not only does its plot/character twists and reveals heat up the story to a white-hot blaze, it also holds a sentimental place in my heart in a way the others couldn’t.

At the time of its release in 2005, I was a user of Barnes & Noble University online (I really miss it!) and they offered a reading group for the book. Three actually, in August, September and October. As soon as I saw it, the magnetic pull was strong. I knew if I allowed myself to get involved with the group, I would become completely absorbed, and I really needed to be Continue reading

UP!–The PHOENIX: No Ordinary Bird…

Cover - Phoenix(NOTE: while this post is current, scroll on the sidebar —in a separate tab or window—to click to listen to Hedwig’s Theme while reading 😀)

When I first began reading the Harry Potter series, back in the summer of 2001, the only rule I’d set for myself was that I wanted to be sure to read each book prior to its corresponding movie release. I couldn’t easily be buying them all in hardcover, so I had waited ’til each one was released in paperback, that is UNTIL—I read Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! When I finished that book I knew that as soon as Book 6 was released my greedy, anxious little hands would be on that hardcover before it hit the shelves!

Many people have described Harry’s snappy, irritable behavior in “Phoenix” as “teenage angst.” Honestly, I’ve never seen it that way. I mean, really—after, at the end of his 5th year at Hogwarts, having witnessed Cedric Diggory die at the hands of Voldemort, then narrowly escaping death himself, to then be kept in the dark for most of the summer by everyone including his friends, he had good reason to feel more than resentful. Add to that an attack by two Continue reading
