UP!–My First Book of 2015

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m not one to participate in meme’s and challenges, but Sheila at Book Journey (she’s a veteran at this kind of stuff!) hosts a few that are simple and fun and don’t add stress to my life (this is a KEY factor! lol). Last year was her first time hosting a “First Book of the Year” meme and though my blog wasn’t launched yet, I couldn’t resist participating 🙂 So here we are and it’s that time of year again!

2aaaaaaa2015Seeing as she already hooked me into her Harry Potter ReRead-a-long, fitting in yet another novel (I won’t cheat and pick a quick picture book) would be a challenge. That made it relatively easy to choose which of my many books-to-be-read should be the first—the SHORTEST, of course! 😀 That being said, a book that has long been on my TBR “short list” (no pun intended 😉 ) just moved into the “next up” slot: Neil Gaiman‘s Fortunately, the Milk 🙂

OK, here I am, having travelled back
from two days in the future,
in a “Floaty-Ball-Person-Carrier”
(can you guess what that is?!),
to tell you that I’ve read this book and LOVED it!
It is funny and clever from first page to last,
reading all the while with a perpetual smile 😀
This is definitely going to push me
to read more by Neil Gaiman!

  1. im thinking first book of the new year would to start the selection series or the girl in the box series , or the courtlight series , or mystics series , ………… I just cant decide which one i am going to start tonight while i am waiting for midnight , been my dilemna for lie an hour now ! haha 🙂

  2. Yesterday I finished These Broken Stars and really enjoyed it. I don’t normally like reading “companion books” instead of a more conventional series, but I had a recommendation for This Shattered World, so that is my first book up in 2015. (Of course, since I received a long-awaited editorial letter on Monday, reading might take a back seat to revising.)

    • I’ve heard of These Broken Stars, but it’s not on my TBR list…at least not yet lol And I’m thinking you’re right, Dianne. With revising hanging over your head, it’s probably difficult to truly relax and enjoy reading. I know that’s how I am when I have deadlines of any kind. They always take priority!

    • Yes, as much as I love him, I’ve barely read any of his work! I also have The Graveyard Book here waiting in line. THIS one is a lot of fun 🙂 And let’s hope every day is Happy, right? 😀

  5. This looks like a fun, lighthearted read to set the tone right for 2015. I read his “The Graveyard Book”. Awesome writing he does. I’m reading Deborah Harkness’ ” The Book of Life. “

    • You know, I’ve heard The Book of Life mentioned quite a few times, but haven’t looked into it, so I don’t know what type of book it is, though do remember the cover 🙂 And you’re right…this book is VERY lighthearted. The text and illustrations are such a perfect combination and it’s very easy to read—and quick! It’s perfect for me right now 🙂

    • Brona, it definitely is! I purchased it for the “fun” factor, the “Neil Gaiman” factor and the fantastic illustrations 😀 And a “Happy” to you, too! Now, tell me, since I’m clueless…where is “NSW”? The first thing that entered my mind was Nova Scotia, but I highly doubt it’s sunny, sultry or steamy right now lol

    • Hi, Katherine! So glad you popped in 🙂 I read “Charlie” a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Having only seen the movie (the Gene Wilder one—can’t stand the Depp version) many times and LOVE it (adore the music!), I didn’t expect the darkness in the book, but that’s what Raold Dahl writes—with darkness! Ihope you enjoy it 🙂

Ah, what to read this year, I have many things i wish to read, I have a hankering for some Egyptian history at the moment and i am looking forward to tackling some classics, but I also want to read some more Children’s books and football books (soccer to avoid confusion). At the moment I am reading about an unfit 46 year old trying to cycle around Italy, it is amusing so far. There are so many books I could list here but luckily for you I can’t remember any of them and can’t be bothered to get up and look at the book case in the other room lol.

    • Oh, you’re funny, Ste J 🙂 I love what you’re wanting to read, though, and Egyptian history is fascinating, I’m sure. I think, more than anything that would draw my attention is any info about the library of Alexandria. And as far as children’s books, OH, there are so many wonderful ones. In fact, this one featured here, which I just finished reading this morning, is intended for children, but believe me–anyone could enjoy it. It’s funny and clever having kept a smile on my face from first page to last 😀

      I hope we all get to read LOTS of good books this year!

  11. I like how you selected your first read! Makes sense to me. Plus, I love Neil Gaiman- though I haven’t read this one yet. Enjoy. After I finish what I am reading- my first book will be A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Loyd. 🙂

    • Yeah, I had to select it like that, Jessica, and it worked out even better than I’d planned! I finished it this morning 😀 If you can, you should read it. It’s fast and very funny, never mind clever! lol I’ve still got to get back to reading “Snicker” at some point. I hope you enjoy it. So many people have 🙂

  15. I haven’t read any Neil Gaiman, though I know others who have and highly recommend his books. This one sounds like a good read and maybe I’ll follow your read lead.
    My immediate plans for reading are to finish three I have already started before beginning another one. Ones to finish are “Dead Flies and Sherry Trifle” an ebook by my online friend Geoff Le Pard, “Retiring with Attitude” a paper book by my online friend Caroline Lodge and “Alphabetical: How Every Letter Tells a Story” an audiobook by Michael Rosen..
    Next on my list is “On Hearing of my Mother’s Death Six Years After it Happened” by Lori Schafer (also an ebook by another online friend). I do have other partly read books which I dip in and out of from time to time for inspiration or information. As you can see the books are in a variety of formats and from a variety of genres. :0
    I must say, though, that I was a little disappointed with the content of this post. When I saw the title come through in my email notifications I thought you were letting us know about the publication of your first book for the year! LOL 🙂

    • Oh, my, Norah! Wow! I never even considered that could be the impression of the title! lol Trust me, if that ever happens, the heading would probably be “I’M FINALLY GETTING PUBLISHED!!!” lol

      And you do have quite the variety going on there. If, between all that heavier stuff, you want a little “light” break, Fortunately, the Milk is perfect for that. It’s a very quick read and will give your constantly-active brain a bit of a respite!

I have been actually reading books that I want to read for a change. 🙂 So, I’ve been re-reading “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” I just finished “Delivering Happiness” and just began “I Am Malala.” I needed a break from picture books and mg stuff. LOL. My really early workouts on the treadmill have been helping my reading time.
